X-Mas Musings #19 – GR8Conf Brings You All Things Groovy

December is for many people a period of reflection or thought. So I decided to reflect upon last year’s things and thoughts — each day until Christmas. This is day 19.

GR8Conf brings you All Things Groovy

In June I was time for GR8Conf Europe (gr8conf.eu), in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This conference is dedicated to all things in the Groovy ecosystem, such as Groovy, Grails, Gradle, Spock and many more related technologies.

This was my first trip to Copenhagen and I must say — beautiful city!

They have almost as many bikes over there as over here in the Netherlands 🙂

The conference itself took place at the IT University of Copenhagen, which just burst of activity of a new, eager generation of computer scientists.

GR8Conf at the IT University — the most glass and futuristic architecture I’ve ever seen. Plenty of space and coffee too .

Among the speakers were several well-known names.

Lunch was pretty good!

We even had our own workshop to prepare, called Masters of Groovy.

My collegue Koen Aben and I gave it already at Greach earlier this year. Since the software for the workshop was pretty much up ‘n running Koen wanted to give it a stab alone, this year at GR8Conf, but during the conference he sat often somewhere in the corner preparing some last minute things, and fixing possible DHCP issues for participants who would bring their Linux laptop to the workshop 🙂

Between sessions I even had time to continue some work on Bulletproof — also getting some feedback from Paul King, creator of many of the existing AST transformations in Apache Groovy, and qualified to say something about @Immutable which I was tying to work around 🙂

Outside GR8Conf opening-hours I explored a bit of Copenhagen.

Together with all kinds of other like-minded software craftsmen and women — it’s been a great experience in an awesome place in Denmark. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone interested in all these wonderful technologies some of us use every day.

I want to thank Søren and friends for putting in all the hard work for GR8Conf.
